Do Golf Clubs Fit in a Mazda Miata? (Explained)

Thrilling and drop-dead gorgeous, the Mazda MX-5 Miata is an affordable luxury sports car with a convertible top. It’s snug but nicely equipped, boasting numerous practical functions and basic accommodations.

Like most two-seat convertibles, the MX-5 Miata doesn’t have a lot of truck space. So, this begs the question: do golf clubs fit in a Mazda Miata?

With a 4.5-cubic-foot trunk, the MX-5 Miata can accommodate a carry-on golf bag with some adjustments, but not much else. It won’t fit a full-size staff bag or a cart bag unless you cut the interior lining of the car.

In this article, I’ll discuss everything you need to know about the Miata’s trunk space, including what golf clubs fit in the trunk.

Let’s dive right in!

Do Golf Clubs Fit in a Mazda Miata?

With a starting price of roughly $27,000, the Mazda MX-5 Miata is arguably the most affordable convertible in today’s market—especially with the features it comes with.

It’s nearly as efficient as economy cars with a rating of 26 mpg town/34 mpg freeway, which is almost unheard of for a sports car.

Plus, it’s surprisingly potent. Even with its small, 2.0-liter engine, it generates 51 lb-ft of torque and clocks 0 to 60 mph in only 5.7 seconds. Let’s also not forget its iconic styling and signature detailing!

From its diver-focused interior to its premium sound system, there’s little to complain about the Mazda MX-5 Miata. I’d have gotten one myself if I was into sports cars! The only thing I’d change about the Miata is its tiny storage space.

To begin with, two-seater sports cars aren’t known for their storage space, so the fact that the Miata doesn’t have much storage isn’t all that unsurprising. What’s actually surprising is the fact that it only has 4.5-cubic-foot of space, which is much smaller than most sports cars.

Although you can fit a standard carry-on golf bag in there, it’s an extremely tight fit. You might have to do some adjustments to the boot to actually accommodate the entire width of your golf bag.

YouTuber Pannel1g demonstrated this perfectly with his 2019 MX-5 Miata.

In the video, he cut out the interior lining a bit to fit the stand bag in the trunk. He then placed his long irons in the bottom of the trunk before situating the stand golf bag on top of them. He was also able to put his other golfing equipment in the trunk, like a ball retriever and a backpack.

Driver clubs didn’t fit at all, so he took them out and placed them in the front seat. But you can probably put the driver clubs in the trunk at an angle alongside the bag if you don’t carry any other equipment.

What Types of Golf Bags Fit In a Mazda Miata?

With only 4.5-cubic-foot of space, you can’t fit much in the trunk of a Miata without damaging the car. However, you can safely store several types of golf bags in there, like carry-on bags and stand bags.

Carry-on bags are slim and portable, specifically designed for golfers who take their golf bags around the course. It’s especially popular among golfers who carry less than the allotted 14 clubs.

Stand bags are slightly bulkier than carry-on bags, but not by much. They can still fit in the trunk of a Miata, but you may have to remove the sidelining as Pannel1g did.

You won’t have this issue with a 2006 to 2009 Miata model though, as the trunk space is a bit bigger than the subsequent models (5.3 cubic feet as opposed to 4.5-cubic-feet).

Staff bags and cart bags unfortunately don’t fit an MX-5 Miata. They’re just too big and bulky. They won’t fit the passenger seat, either; not with a lot of squeezing, at least.

What Golf Clubs Fit in the Trunk of a Mazda Miata?

It really depends on the Miata’s model.

Older models from 2006 to 2009 have a slightly larger boot space than newer models. This means that they can fit men’s sets better than the latter.

Newer models can only fit standard irons, putters, and wedges of around 36 inches in length. Drivers fit in the back of an older Miata only. They don’t fit in newer models.

Final Thoughts

The Mazda Miata sports convertible has a lot of things going for it in terms of performance and functionality, but it disappoints in trunk space.

Newer models have a boot space of only around 4.5 cubic feet, which is just enough to fit standard-sized golf clubs like irons, putters, and wedges.

But even then, it’s an extremely tight fit. If your clubs are longer than average, you might have to remove the sidelining of the boot to fit your clubs. Drivers don’t fit in the trunk at all, so they need to be placed in the passenger seat.

So if you’re a golfer planning to buy a Mazda Miata, measure the trunk first. If the trunk doesn’t fit your clubs, it might be best to invest in another sports convertible
